Both oscillatory events, especially when co-occurring in the constellation of spindles nesting in the slow oscillation upstate, are considered to support memory formation and underlying synaptic plasticity. WebbSleep spindles can be divided into slow (10–12 Hz) and fast (13–15 Hz) spindles with differing topographic distribution and functional significance. 2 The deepest stage of NREM sleep is stage N3, or slow wave sleep (SWS), and is characterized by electroencephalogram (EEG) slow waves in the delta (0.5–4.5 Hz) frequency band.
